WHO I AM

I’m Talin Vartanian, an editor, writer, journalist, researcher and logophile. (In case you’re wondering, my first name is pronounced ta-leen.)

MY STORY

I have more than 40 years of experience as a journalist and CBC Radio producer. Professionally, editing and writing skills have been critical to my career. Personally, words have been a lifelong passion and pastime.

That passion was evident at a young age, when I was a spelling bee champion, and it has endured. It’s still a thrill to fill in the last square in a crossword puzzle or drop a seven-letter word on a Scrabble board. I’ve been a voracious reader all my life. Often, I wish I had a red Sharpie in hand to eliminate a misplaced apostrophe in a magazine article or fix a misspelled word on a public sign.

The CBC hired me as a fresh-out-of-university journalism graduate and I never looked back. I’ve had the privilege of producing many of CBC Radio’s best-loved programs, including Morningside, As It Happens and The Sunday Edition. During the fall of 2001, I created Canada Reads and was the program’s executive producer for five years.

For about a decade, I also appeared on both CBC radio and television as consumer journalist Citizen Talin.

While developing a side business as an editor, an intensive magazine editing course at Ryerson University helped me strengthen my skills. Since then, I’ve sharpened government reports, perfected news releases and collaborated with authors on their memoirs.

I live in Toronto with my husband, who’s a talented wine writer. We edit each other’s work…with a mix of affection and affliction.
